Pompeii is the town where time stood still after the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius volcano nearly 2000 years ago. Now rediscovered, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With your private luxury chauffeur driven vehicle, we will take you on this full day 12 hours tour. As we arrive at Pompeii, you will meet your private expert Pompeii guide who will take you for two hours around this incredible place. There is no where on earth like it. After, we will head into the hills onto one of the most spectacularly beautiful drives in the world. Cruising at a sedate pace with steep cliffs beside us, you will witness postcard perfect colourful towns and villages with multi coloured houses looking like candy boxes in the distance. Down below we will have the fishing villages where today you will see also luxury yachts of the rich and famous. All bordered by a turquoise sea. The villages have not changed in centuries and are surrounded by greenery and forests.
Pompeii as a town was in evidence as early as the 6th or 7th century BC and was to become a Roman colony in 80BC, after a failed rebellion against the Roman Republic. By the time of its total destruction by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD, it had a population of around 11000 people. The eruption was to cover every inhabitant and building in a thick layer of molten ash of up to 5 metres. This had the amazing effect of preserving everything. The ash created an airtight and moisture proof seal resulting in what we see today. Artefacts are in near perfect condition. Where bodies were found, it was possible to fill the ash, covering it with plaster, thus producing an accurate model of the person in their dying moment. Incredibly the site lay untouched until its rediscovery in 1599. It was not until 150 years later that Spanish engineer Alcubierre realised its significance.
Now we understand the might of the discoveries as never before as modern man had such an insight into life 2 millennia past. No longer was it necessary to assume how different classes lived as the full city is there to be seen and with the artefacts and tools it was quite easy to say who lived where. So we have some very obvious finds such as merchants villas with fine mosaic floors. Ale houses, artisans workshops and attached dwellings and even houses of ill repute.
With 50000 visitors a week this is one of the most visited places in Italy but due to its vast size you almost feel alone when inside.
UNESCO describes the Amalfi coastline “An outstanding example of Mediterranean landscape”. The tiny colourful towns and villages dotting the coastline are a magnet to the jetset. The favorite Positano is a feast for your eyes with its pastel coloured immaculate buildings looking as they would hundreds of years before. As you stroll its narrow lanes and sit with a cool drink in a stunningly beautiful piazza, you feel you have been dropped into some kind of paradise. Positano’s tiny shops are full of chic fashion for the trendy visitors. The small town of Amalfi has a wonderful Arabic/Norman Cathedral as its centrepiece. Sorrento the biggest town on the coast is a popular holiday resort though it still has quite a slow pace about it.
As we arrive at Pompeii your guide will meet you and take you directly into the “city” where you will begin your astonishing 2 hour private tour. Astonishing because all you will see is real, nothing is recreated. The bodies you see are plaster casts of their original ash tombs. The houses are as they were left that fateful day. You will see perfectly preserved mosaic decorations in houses but these are not restorations as elsewhere. The ash was just carefully removed. This is quite uniquely a snapshot of one day in history when time was to stand still.
As we leave there, your driver will head you onto the Amalfi coast road: 50km of more beauty than one eye should see in one day. Stopping along the way at the towns of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Your driver will give you suggestions for lunch as he is an expert on the area. You will be able to eat with a view of the turquoise sea below.
A joyous day with a mixture of tragedy and beauty. Add in probably one of the most fantastic places to eat with a view to die for. Just perfect. Just so you know it will finish perfectly, your driver who by now will be your friend, will drop you at your hotel door.
