See the masterpieces of Raphael and Michelangelo as well as many more. Gaze in awe at the Sistine Chapel ceiling and ponder the sheer size and opulence of the worlds biggest Catholic Church. Do so in full comfort by avoiding the crowds and the heat of Rome during the summertime.
Walk among masterpieces of the Vatican Galleries. See items created centuries ago that challenge as well as engage your perception, particularly in the Gallery of the Tapestries. How can a table in a flat tapestry completely change perspective as you walk past it? You will see huge maps where the cartographers, the world's best at the time, possibly missed out including your country! The Vatican has many secrets and wonders that await discovery!
Among these, the four Raphael rooms in the Vatican Museums are a major highlight of the visit along with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and make up the Grand Fresco Sequence of the High Renaissance period in Rome. It is worth noting that although Michelangelo was an undoubted master of painting, it was not his preferred medium. He was foremost a sculptor and there lay his passion. The world famous stanze di Raffaello are a suite of apartments originally intended for Pope Julius II. It is thought he commissioned them to out do his predecessor Pope Alexander VI. He never achieved this as at the time of his death only 2 rooms were complete. Pope Leo X had them completed. While in the Raphael Rooms, witness possibly the greatest single masterpiece of fresco art, The School of Athens, interpreted as a study and depiction of philosophy is thought to include every notable philosopher from Ancient Greek history. The only one that is instantly recognisable is Aristotle as we have his bust to compare it with. Vasari also suggests that he also included himself.
