Bernini created the Baroque style and then made it his own. He was a great sculptor, an artist as well as an architect. Quoting the critic Irving Lavin, he was to create the “Unity of Visual Art”. However, his talents did not stop there: he was also a writer and director of satire for theatre. His ability to have the vision of a huge building concept such as St Peter’s Square and construct with such accuracy that still marvels today's young engineers was uncanny. His sculptures make him a worthy successor to Michelangelo as his use of marble is astounding and there are so many examples around Rome. He was a prolific painter, though his medium was oils and usually small as a contrast to his other work. Bernini was to do many commissions for the church and much in St Peter’s Basilica. He designed and constructed The Baldacchino (the four pillars below the cupola), also the Chair of St Peter and much more. At the young age of 23 he was knighted by Pope Gregory XV. Although towards the end of his career, his style was to fall out of favour as neo-classicists would start to criticize baroque and it was not until the late 1800s, when art historians started to dissect its influences on Rome, that his importance and influence and also the magnitude of his life, career and lasting legacy were to start to be appreciated again as they are today.
