The Roman Colosseum, the largest amphitheatre ever constructed is always a magical place to visit where your imagination can run wild. The opportunity to visit as the sun is setting over Rome’s historic skyline and the moon is rising is a mouth watering ideal. With a special permission, we can take a small group of up to 25 people into The Colosseum on a night. This is a rare opportunity to avoid the huge crowds and heat, to feel the atmosphere and huge size, not to mention the pure skill of the Romans who built and created such a monument. It has truly stood the test of time. Wars, floods and many, many earthquakes have not brought it down. 2000 years of history will be under your feet and all around you.
We will meet at our office for a welcome drink of prosecco or wine and local snacks where you will be introduced to your guide for the evening. Also you will have a little time to chat with fellow guests in a cordial environment.
From there we will take an eye-opening tour of the Forum and Trajan Market from the outside. This area of Rome was central to everyday life in ancient times. This will lead us to Piazza Venezia and the Victorio Emmanuell III Monument. This creation divides Italian opinion with admirers and detractors. Called The Typewriter by some and The Wedding Cake by others, whatever your view it blends in well with Roman architecture and surprises many that it is little more than a century old. With a brief walk up the Capital Hill you will be able to observe the Michelangelo designed piazza. Passing back by Trajans Column, Trajans Forum and Trajans Market, you will realise just how advanced this early world power was. While most of the world was still living in houses constructed from mud, Rome already had a multi-storied early version of Walmart. Before long we will be at the entry to The Colosseum. With absolutely no lines we will be welcomed to enter. You will notice a lot of envious people around wondering why they cannot enter also!
We will once inside be given access to what we call the “Dungeons” area. Real name “Hypogeum”, this is where the gladiators, convicts and unwilling volunteers waited their fate. A truly awesome place where normal visitors are not allowed to venture. You will also access to the Arena Floor where Gladiator did their combats. Climbing higher, we will have a view over Rome as the buildings take on their golden hue as sun sets. While in the Colosseum, your expert guide will give you an accurate description of the horrors and highlights of the games that would have taken place right where you stand. Never before or since has mankind taken so much pleasure from death. Be it human or animal and regardless of how long the games were (the inaugural games would last over 100 days), there was always a constant supply of bodies to die in one way or another. It is important to realise also that the games were free to the spectators as this was all about keeping the public happy.
We look forward to seeing you on one of our very special evening tours. Join us for a drink and snack before taking a tour of a lifetime.
